PioneerLAB Core Studio | Full Year

One strong foundation. Many directions.

PioneerLAB Core Studio is a 28-week, full-year technology and innovation program for teens ages 13-17. The program is designed to build strong foundations in computational thinking, programming, systems thinking and technical judgment, so students can understand how technology works and continue adapting as tools change.

The year unfolds through three connected studio phases. In Fall, Code Architects develops the logic behind digital and physical systems. In Winter, Interactive Futures explores applications, data and intelligent systems. In Spring, Future Prototypes brings the year together through a larger capstone challenge with increasing student choice and independence.

Students learn through purposeful projects that move from understanding and modifying systems to building, integrating, testing and explaining systems of their own. AI is introduced as a collaborator within that process, while students remain responsible for understanding the work, checking results and making final decisions.

Build interactive digital projects, smart physical systems and data-driven applications Work across software, electronics, data and emerging technologies Progress from guided challenges to greater choice and independence Bring the year together in a Future Systems capstone
Develops computational thinking, logical reasoning and systems thinking Builds the code literacy needed to read, trace, test and modify computational systems Connects programming, physical computing, data and AI through a coherent full-year progression Strengthens debugging, testing, technical judgment, communication and responsible AI use
Frame and break down problems into manageable parts and plan a computational solution Read, write, trace, test and modify code using core programming concepts Explain how inputs, data, logic, decisions, outputs and feedback work within a system Build and test interactive digital and physical systems and make informed improvements Work with structured data and explore the difference between rule-based and data-driven decisions Use AI-supported tools with verification, judgment and accountability Integrate multiple ideas or components into a larger project and clearly explain design and testing decisions
Fall | Code Architects: interactive digital and physical-computing studio builds Winter | Interactive Futures: an application that works with data and computational decision-making Spring | Future Prototypes: Future Systems capstone bringing together multiple areas of Year 1 learning Year-end studio showcase with project demonstration, testing evidence and student explanation
