EMERGING TECH - AI LIGHT

Galactic Battles - SCRATCH AI Light Edition

Ages - 8 - 12

Aug 24th - Aug 28th, 2026

Alien ships are approaching, and the galaxy needs defenders.

Students design and code an arcade-style space game where strategy, timing, and smart behaviour matter. As the game evolves, campers learn how logic and AI-inspired systems create challenge and excitement.

SCRATCH GAME DEV - AI LIGHT EDITION

Galactic Battles - SCRATCH AI Light Edition

In Galactic Battles, students design and code an action-packed space shooter game, inspired by classic arcade games like Space Invaders.

Using Scratch, campers build player controls, enemies, scoring systems, and levels. As the game evolves, students explore AI Light concepts by using Scratch’s Machine Learning extensions to create smarter enemy behaviour or adaptive gameplay.

Campers learn how intelligent systems can change game difficulty, respond to player actions, and create more engaging experiences, all without complex math or advanced theory.

Solution Topic

Students explore investigative questions by designing an arcade-style space game and discovering how AI Light concepts make games respond intelligently.

Kids will inquire:

  • How do games decide when enemies react or difficulty changes?

  • How can predictions influence gameplay?

  • How do designers improve balance and fun

Design, Experiment, Build

Campers will:

  • Learn the basics of game development

  • Ideate and brainstorm an exciting space-themed game world

  • Understand Platformer Game Construct

  • Apply Real-world Physics to the game - Gravity, movement, etc.

  • Build gameplay mechanics

  • Experiment with enemy behaviour

  • Train simple AI models

  • Connect predictions to gameplay

  • Playtest and refine

  • Present their final game

This stage emphasizes experimentation and systems thinking.

AI Light in This Camp

Students get an exciting introduction to Machine Learning using Scratch’s ML extensions. Campers train simple inputs (like sounds, gestures, or choices) and use predictions to trigger game actions, such as activating a “Force power,” launching a special move, or unlocking mission events.

AI Light focuses on the core concept: machines learn from examples and use predictions to make decisions, without complex math or theory.

Camp Learning Journey

Day 1: Game Setup - Player, Enemies & Space World

Students design the game environment and set up player controls and enemy sprites.

Day 2: Game Logic: Scoring, Levels & Challenges

Campers' code scoring systems, collisions, and difficulty progression.

Day 3: Intro AI and Machine Learning  - Coding Smarter Game play

Students will take a dive into the world of AI. They will learn about Machine Learning and classification models, and understand how to train and code smart player behaviour in thier games.

Day 4: AI in Gameplay: Adaptive Battles

Campers connect trained models to game mechanics, making gameplay more dynamic and responsive.

Day 5: Final Playtest & Galactic Arcade Showcase

Students polish their games and share them during a Galactic Arcade Showcase.

Friday Fun Day

Camp wraps with a Galactic Arcade Showcase, where students playtest each other’s games, vote on fun awards (like “Best Boss Battle” or “Most Epic Power-Up”), and celebrate their progress as game developers.

Expect lots of cheering, playtesting, and celebration!

PIZZA LUNCH DAY (Campers enjoy PIZZA lunch Party on Friday - On us!)

We will know closer to the camp week if this camp will head to a TECH Company.

SKILLS GAINED

Why does this camp matter?

This camp teaches students that behind every exciting game is thoughtful design and logic

As children build their own arcade-style space game, they learn how rules, behaviours, and decisions create challenge and fun. The introduction of AI Light concepts helps students see how games can respond dynamically rather than follow fixed patterns. These skills strengthen logical thinking, creativity, and confidence - important foundations for future coding, game design, and problem-solving.
